Ban of portable ehthanol Fireplace

Dear Sir/Madam

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is notifying possible suppliers of certain decorative alcohol fuelled burners that the Commonwealth Minister for Small Business, the Hon. Michael McCormack MP, issued a proposed ban notice for the imposition of a national interim ban on certain decorative alcohol fuelled burners, on 21 December 2016. The notice is attached. A copy of this notice was published on the Product Safety Australia website on 21 December 2016 - http://www.productsafety.gov.au/news/decorative-alcohol-fuelled-burners.

The proposed ban notice includes:

  • a summary of the reasons for the proposed imposition of a national interim ban
  • an invitation to any person who supplies or proposes to supply the consumer goods listed in the Draft Notice to request a conference with the ACCC within 30 days
  • a copy of the Draft Notice for the proposed imposition of a national interim ban;

The proposed ban notice sets out what you need to do if you want to request a conference with the ACCC about the proposed imposition of a national interim ban. You have until 20 January 2017 to request a conference.

You may be aware that several Australian States have imposed an interim ban on the supply of certain decorative alcohol fuelled burners. The attached Commonwealth proposed ban notice does not affect those State interim bans. The proposed ban notice is one step in the process to consider a national interim ban on certain decorative alcohol fuelled burners.

If you require additional information please send an email to productsafety.regulation@accc.gov.au

I’ll follow this email up with another email early in the New Year.

If you do not supply or intend to supply consumer goods of the kind set out in this proposed ban notice, this notice does not affect you.

Regards,
